For Richard, improving his health was a big reason to stop smoking – but a little encouragement from his partner helped too.
"My partner was fed up with me smelling of smoke," he admits.
Richard had tried to stop smoking before, but this time something had changed. He felt much more motivated and, when he began his quit attempt, he was very confident that he could succeed.
With the support of Smokefree Sheffield, Richard used varenicline to help him quit, which he found really helpful. But medication wasn't the only thing that kept him on track.
Richard received face-to-face support from his stop smoking advisor, Sharon at the Primrose Family Centre and says knowing she was supporting him gave him extra motivation to succeed.
"Sharon's help really kept me going. I didn't want to let her down."
Since becoming smoke free, Richard has already noticed some important improvements to his health and everyday life. His breathing has improved and he's rediscovered something many people notice after quitting – food tastes much better!
Richard particularly valued being able to meet his advisor face-to-face and says the encouragement and support he received from Sharon was one of the most helpful parts of his quit attempt.
He's been so pleased with his experience that he's already recommended the service to a friend.
His advice to anyone else in Sheffield who is thinking about stopping smoking is simple:
"Just join and get support."
