A massive well done to Jessica who began her smoke-free journey after suffering a stroke, her determination and positivity have allowed her to change her lifestyle, health and fitness. We asked her about her experiences with the service.
What was your main reason for accessing the service?
My health was the core reason I decided it was time to make a change, I’d recently had a stroke. It was a terrifying, awful experience but it woke me up to the fact that health is the most important thing there is.
Did you believe you could achieve 4 weeks smokefree?
Yes, in moments of doubt I knew I had the right support around me in my advisor and loved ones.
Have you used medication to help you quit?
I used nicotine patches, they really helped me combat difficult cravings. Pretty soon I didn’t need to use them anymore, as my cravings disappeared.
Apart from medication, what else helped you to quit and stay smoke-free?
I didn’t need any other nicotine products as I was quitting (though I understand some people do), the SMS messages were super effective. My advisor (Neil) was brilliant, he provided me with expert guidance every single day, I felt confident that I could call him if I was struggling.
Has your health improved since you quit?
Massively, I’m able to breathe so clearly that I’ve been getting out for regular ways, which I haven’t been able to do for years! I set myself step challenges using my pedometer, I’m achieving new goals each week.
My senses of taste and smell have improved too, so I’ve been cooking delicious recipes and enjoying healthy food and drink.
Has the lockdown helped or hindered you?
Its helped me stay away from the temptation of cigarettes because I’m currently shielding, on the flip side the rise in stress and anxiety has also been difficult. Luckily I was receiving motivational texts, using the services’ phone line and keeping in contact with Neil to share what’s on my mind whenever I needed to.
What advice would you give to others who might be considering going smoke-free?
Don’t wait, do it today. Better sooner than waiting until later and ending up sorry.
